Scheduled international air routes

The majority of visitors arrive to Mongolia by air through Chinggis Khaan International Airport located 18 km to the southwest of Ulaanbaatar. The airport reconstructed in 1990 currently houses the immigration and customs offices. Since the refurbishment, the waiting area has become more comfortable and the luggage delivery service has improved greatly. The international air transport is operated by MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Korean Airline, Air China, and Aeroflot while the domestic air transport is operated by MIAT, Aero Mongolia, and EZNIS companies. Japanese Airlines and All Nippon Airways have recently started operating new charter flights between Japan and Mongolia during summer tourist season. Domestic flights

Mongolia - a vast country with a sparse population and poor infrastructure relies heavily on air transport. MIAT, Aero Mongolia, and Eznis airlines operate scheduled and charter domestic flights to 21 aimags. Most flights have their hub in Ulaanbaatar and thus, getting from one destination to another within Mongolia often requires a touchdown in UB. A round trip to Dalanzadgad or Murun costs approximately USD 310.
Aero Mongolia and Eznis operate more than 90% of the flights to all aimags.

Eznis operates flights to Altai, Donoi, Ovoot, Choibalsan, Dalanzadgad, Bayankhongor, Murun, Ulaangom, Khovd, Ulgii.

Rail Services

Mongolian railway is comprised of two separate rail lines. First, the Trans-Mongolian main line that runs for 1,110 km and operates between Russia and China and goes through Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. Second, the Bayan Tumen Rail line that runs in the north east from the Russian border to Choibalsan in Eastern Mongolia for 239 km.

The total length of the Mongolian railway including its branch lines is 1,815 km. Mongolian railway transports freight and passengers carrying out more than 95 per cent of freight turnover and 55 per cent of passenger traffic of Mongolia. Tickets for domestic trains are available from Ulaanbaatar Railway Station and other railway offices throughout the country. The domestic railway ticket office can book a ticket up to a month in advance for additional charge. For inquiries, call 1940.

Either an invitation of the receiving entity or an official request of the sending country and the organization. For tourists wishing to stay over 30 days up to 90 days is required a letter of invitation from a travel agency of Mongolia. If you are traveling on a personal invitation of a citizen of Mongolia, an invitation approved by the office of immigration, Naturalization and Foreign Citizens of Mongolia, and applicant’s written statement concerning his/her financial credibility to cover his/her stay in Mongolia. For those passing Mongolia in transit, onward ticket and visa for next destination are required. For any information related to consular matters, please contact in person by telephone or e-mail the nearest diplomatic or consular mission of Mongolia.

The following are fees charged for visa:

Single entry visa – US$25 For urgent service/ within a working day/ US$50. This kind of visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issuing.
Multiple entry/exit visa valid for 6 months – US$65. For urgent service /within a working day/ US$130.
Multiple entry/ exit visa valid for 1 year – US$130. For urgent service /within a working day/ US$260.
Visa extension valid for 1 week – US$15. For urgent service /within a working day/ US$30. US$2 per a day exceeding a week.

Health requirements

Yellow fever, smallpox, cholera vaccinations are required. Bring a basic medical kit and own medical supplies.

Customs

Every traveler must fill in a customs declaration. It is prohibited to import and export:

Guns, weapons and ammunitions without special permission
Explosive items
Radioactive substance
Opium, hashish and other narcotics
Pornographic publications
Publications, records, films and drawings against Mongolia

Research materials, paleontological and archaeological findings, collection of various plants and their seeds, birds, wild and domestic animals, wool, raw skins and hides and furs without permissions of appropriate Mongolian authorities.
